Sometimes something a little spooky or exotic is fun especially as it gets closer to Halloween.

I just shaped some white sculpey clay with my hands and used a pencil, screwdriver and stick to create the face since i don’t have any fancy clay tools.

Then I cooked it for a half hour, let it cool and coated with red acrylic paint. After the candle holder dried, I added a little detail with some yellow paint.

We have beads all over the house and this would be a perfect way to use them.

Grab a couple old pickle or jam jars and start wrapping some wired beads to make an outdoor hanging candle holder. Insert a tea light and watch it glow! For instructions see Eebeads.com: Silver Wire and Beaded Candle Holders.

For a similar project, see Better Homes and Gardens Sparkling Beaded Candle Holder. This one is smaller and would be good for a votive candle indoors or out. They also used glue to reinforce the wire, which I think is a good idea.

Here’s a citronella candle offering a new slant on the garden gnome. I’m not sure what’s up with the blue color but it’s different and can be found at Clean Air Gardening. I’m not a big fan of gnomes but my daughter gave me a tiny one and I didn’t have the heart to tell her so it’s sitting on my desk.

If you’re looking for a more traditional looking candle, check out these votives called Bug Away from 100Candles or citronella pillar candles from HGTV Market Place.

If you want to make your own citronella candle, check out CraftBits simple citronella candle project instructions.

Citronella candles do help if you sit close enough but it’s still best to have some back up protection.

Thanks to Cathy Wong, I found several other natural mosquito repellents you could try. Apparently, repellent containing 5% fennel oil is 84% more effective against mosquitoes after 90 minutes.

See Natural Mosquito Repellents for more ideas.

I like the idea of using battery operated candles in some of the lanterns, especially if they’re paper.

You can also go for glass, metal, nylon and even silk. I love the ambiance candle lanterns create. When you have a few multi-colored lanterns hanging in a row it really livens things up.

Shown here is a silk lantern from the Paper Lantern Store. It’s called Maeve with Feng Shui Shang-Hai Tan Lamp, inspired by Vietnamese artisans and meant to bring luck.

Another gorgeous lantern I found was a floating water lotus light. You can float these waterproof lanterns in your pool, pond or display them in pretty glass containers.

If you would like to try making your own floating lantern I found an excellent article that gives you step by step instructions. (How to make your own homemade paper floating lantern)

Mother’s Day is coming fast and if you’re still looking for some last minute gift ideas or crafts I found a few quick candle projects. Most moms love candles so you can’t really go wrong although my mother might not know where the heck to put more.

Things are warming up so outdoor lanterns are a fun option. We always have tin cans kicking around and big coffee cans would be perfect for creating big sturdy lanterns.

You could put a row of them out with citrus candles inside and fight off the bugs at the same time. At CraftBits there are easy instructions for tin can lanterns. If you don’t have a pin hammer handy, a regular hammer will do.

DLTK has an adorable candle holder project made out of a baby food jar. Kids could decoupage just about anything from paper or tissue onto it and have fun personalizing the candle holder by finding pics of her favorite things.

Better Homes and Gardens have several Mother’s Day craft ideas for creating personalized gifts for moms. I love the mugs with handprints and the decorated flowerpot that could double as candle holders.

If your mom is into oil or tart burners, Jane Lake gives us detailed instructions on how to make your own scented candle melts or tarts at All Free Crafts. It’s a great way to use up old wax and you can include a couple of your mom’s favorite scents.

Have some more ideas? Tell us about them!

I thought this would make a good spring candle craft project and like how they use a rock for the base. You could glue all sorts of other things on to the rock as well such as moss, shells, silk flowers etc.

We still have a ton of snow here and March break is coming up so this snow lantern project will be fun for our family. It snowed so much today that all the school buses were canceled but the afternoon turned warm so it was a great day to play in the snow. I mostly stomped on it because I was running around looking for skates.

Anyway, here’s a great video I found at Metacalfe on How to Make a Snow Lantern. It’s so pretty and would look gorgeous in the dark. It’s like a miniature igloo made out of snowballs and the candle light shines through the holes. I’m looking forward to making one tomorrow because now everyone is asleep.
