Courting Candles

Courting CandleMy dad brought one of these courting candles home from a garage sale years ago and explained them to me.

Fathers used to time their daughter’s courting time by lighting this candle and when it got down to the metal, the courting was over. It was conveniently adjustable so if he didn’t like the looks of the guy he could shorten the time.

I found this wrought iron courting candle at Unique Home and Garden Shoppe. There are also “outhouse” candles and beautiful wrought iron votive holders there.
