Reusable Candle Made With Cooking Oil & Sand

Here’s a candle making video that illustrates an easy way to make a reusable candle out of cooking oil and sand. When the oil runs out, just add more! If you wanted to fancy it up, you could dye the sand or oil a pretty color. He used coconut oil, but you could use any sort of cooking oil with the same result. His wick is simply a bit of cotton wrapped around a toothpick. It’s so simple, yet pretty and effective.

Lovely! I was taught by my mom to use a slice of cork to hold the wick (no sand used). This then floated on olive oil. These candles are used mainly as a rememberence flame to the departed (Portuguese custom).
